Me, a poet..?? (Truth is stranger than fiction)

No Answers

I’m sorry, but you’ll get no answers from me.
Hell, if I had answers, ‘tis wealthy I‘d be.
Questions are many, but answers are few,
And the wealthy don’t share with the likes of me and you..

At least not their answers to how they got rich –
Their happiness, prosperity, and tax benefits.
Oh, they’ll tell you it’s hard work, perseverance and toil,
“Good luck..?? No way, José..!! That’s just a foil..!!”

But isn’t there wealth in the smile of a child
Who never will live a normal lifestyle,
Who loves without knowing what it is that he does,
Only that it seems to be pleasing to us..??

I’m sure you have questions – you’re trying to see -
All the same, you’ll get no answers from me.

Can't explain it - sometimes things just pop into my head - ideas, phrases - things I have to get on "paper" and play with them, shape them, see what comes out. The term "wordsmith"comes to mind..

Anyway, we are rejoicing in a breakthrough with our grandson (11 years old now and developmentally challenged, in a class by himself) - he can count and distinguish colors..!! His teacher places a number of objects on the tray in front of him and asks, "How many..??" He will then press a switch the appropriate number of times and pull his hand away..!! Or, after programming the switch to audibly cycle through the list of colors, she will place an object on the tray and ask, "what color is it..??, and he will press the switch until he hears the right color, and pull his hand away..!! We were amazed..!! Made us shed tears of joy, too..!! His teachers have told us all along, "He's in there..!!" Maybe some day, we'll hear him say, "Mommy" - what a day that will be..!!

I love it! Especially the last verse:

But isn’t there wealth in the smile of a child
Who never will live a normal lifestyle,
Who loves without knowing what it is that he does,
Only that it seems to be pleasing to us..??

Dabhoch, I've always kept a special place in my heart for those like your grandchild. I love them all! I believe they have a place reserved in heaven because of their innocence and their unconditional love.

Oh, and you are quite the poet!

Best regards,
Robert
