I came into the acting profession late in life, and from the first time I stood in front of the camera, I knew it was something I wanted to do full time. I have been very lucky to have worked with some of the great Irish and international actors.
Like most kids growing up, being an actor/actress was always something we wanted to do, but never thought we would achieve. I remember being out one night chatting with the lads and voicing my dreams of being an actor and they basically laughed themselves silly at the idea, not only because they said I was too old, but also because I suffer from Dyslexia, which would make it impossible for me to read a script. I think their ridicule at that time made me even more determined.
My first job in front of the camera was with Assets Modeling Agency. With Assets, I did a few catwalk jobs, a billboards for an Anti-Smoking Campaign and various other campaigns.
This gave me a real taste of what it was like to be in front of a camera. I joined Backstage Casting Agency who sent me on my first audition for "Mystics" and I got the part a Miami gangster. I was lucky enough to work with the great David Kelly, Milo O'Shea and Don Baker, who were a great inspiration to me. As a new comer to the business they gave me some very helpful tips and words of encouragement.
When I think back on the night that I was out with the lads and how they laughed at me, I actually believe they did me a favour, because I am the type of person, that if you tell me I can't do something, it only makes me more determined to get up and do it. My dyslexia, while it might slow me down a bit, it doesn't stop me from doing what I love to do.
So to anyone reading this, who suffers from a reading disability, my advice to you is, don't ever give up on following your dreams, because if you put your mind to it, nothing is impossible.
