For my wife and I, we usually stay up late, watch TV and snack. We don't always stay up until midnight. But the tradition is to stay up until midnight and watch the new year come in. Many people drink on that evening. Some people drink heavily. This year a young man came to our door at 12:30 too drunk to know where he was. Sometimes folks set off fireworks at midnight. Sounds like the traditions are fairly similar between France and the US
