Welcome to my page.

This is the flag of my region (Twente, the Netherlands), which has the Saxon Steed on it. This is the symbol for Saxon heritage, much like the Uilleann harp is a symbol of Ireland.

This is the crest of my hometown, Riessen. It shows a twig, the "Riessentak" from which my hometown got its name. Riessen received city rights in 1243. So it has existed well before that. We do not even know why our town is named Riessen. An interesting story though is that in the early middle ages there were two settlements approximately at the same sites our town and a neighbouring village are nowadays. They were separated by a forest. Once, a storm raged, and ravaged the forest completely. All trees had fallen in one direction, and pointed their branches and twigs (the Riessen) to the east, and the trunks (the Hoolten) to the west.

Invading London

Last Christmas Eve, in my hometown, a number of choirs teamed up to sing together. A couple of musicians from the Music Union I'm also with, supported them. Amongst the listeners were a number of Assyrians (The are several Assyrian communities in the Netherlands). They happened to be members of an Assyrian choir, and liked what they heard. After the "concert", an Assyrian delegation asked the musicians if they were willing to support their choir on a very special occasion. They had been preparin… Continue

Dutch Culture 3: Santa Claus?

First of all I would like to apologise if the large pictures cause you any trouble in reading my blog. I do not know how to compress them.

In the English-speaking world, christmas is the most important feast towards the end of the year. People exchange gifts, undertake all kinds of christmas activities and children believe heartily in the existence of Santa Claus...

In the Netherlands, christmas is celebrated too, but the focus is not so much on the exchange of gifts and the belief in Santa C… Continue

Dutch Culture 2: The Orange Feeling

The reason for this blog is the European Soccer (football) Championships, which is the current big sports event that nearly every dutchman has his mind set on, this year hosted by Austria and Switzerland.

The Dutch team:

Whenever large groups of Dutch (go abroad to) suppport a national sports team (really, any sport), they dress up in all kinds of various ridiculous costumes that vary e… Continue

Dutch Culture 1: Driving in NL

Right so, I haven't uploaded a blog before, so I hereby got blog-deflowered or (b)logged, so to say :)
I decided to use this (irregular or infrequent) blog to explain some features of Dutch culture to the world.

I just received a text message from my girl friend that she's finally passed the driving exams, and so she can go pick up her license and drive out and about the country. I can almost hear the people on LI who know me thinking: But isn't he about 22 years old, so his girlfriend is about… Continue

Ha ha ha...this is getting to be quite funny! Actually, I found a lot of hummpa bands especially your band on www.youtube.com...they are all lumped in together so I'm not sure which one is more recent than the other. Go onto www.youtube.com and tell which ones are more recent maybe? Anyway, I laughed so hard...you guys have wonderful music...there's just gotta be something like this in the good ol' USA. I think I will do some research...do you know of any groups at all that are promoting this kind of music here? Oh, and I love the wild wig!!

You've got to look up the Spike Jones band....the hummpa bands have that kind of unexpected, zany feel in the music. Spike Jones' music from way back is still a classic and very famous for its craziness of sound. He used slide whistles, cow bells, gunshots, etc. for sound effects...was also a serious musician putting out great stuff in his day, but he was quite famous on TV with his crazy, zany band..they were wonderful. Look his music up on iTunes.com and other music websites to hear some of his songs. Here's a wikipedia write up on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Jones.

Hey Martin...welcome to My Page here at Live Ireland. I just watched that wild video of your band and your sound is wonderfully zany and rollicking...how original!! There is nothing like your band here in the USA south...guess the Dutch know how to do things well when it comes to original band sound...congratulations. Stay in touch and continue to celebrate LIFE which you appear to be doing very well!

Peace,
Kathleen

Hola Martin! how are you? It has been a long time indeed! I'm fine, still in crazy Buenos Aires. Waiting for next weekend, it's a long one so I'm heading to Iguazu falls, to wait for spring to start there. It's a beautiful place, you can see pictures of them of my previous journey in this site. I'm not much here but still in touch with most of our common irish wannabes on facebook. If you want to add me: fabia galliano
Arco is heading to USA tomorrow and he is going to meet kobi, linda and daeoin. I met Suga, Evolaine and Myrene. Lovely people from LI.

How are you things? Have you been to Ireland again?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hugs!
