A Long Line

Although I swore an oath that I would not give in
My choices are to hold this grudge or grapple with your whim.
I decided one more night might just do me good
but i have given up the hope of being understood

I come from a long line
of mad Irishmen
and if you cant see that in me-
you best look again.

Some people take it to the edge and they never make it back
I've peered in Dantes chasm, what i saw there just made me laugh.
I have turned the other cheek and taken some on the chin.
But i wont take stupidity or your shit eating grin

Because I come from a long line
of mad Irishmen
if you cant see that in me
you best look again.

My daddy was a boxer, was a madman in the ring
He trained by fighting demons, his old man was the same.
And I've been boxing shadows since I was just knee high
but we cant defeat our history
no matter how we try.

And I come from a long line
of Mad Irishmen
If you cant see that in me-
you best look again.

Me in a foul mood, i usually like it here, but not today

Don’t come to Kansas
There aint nothing here
Just me, a pack of smokes and a half case of beer
Theres no oceans or trees
I tell you nothing to see
don’t come to Kansas
There aint nothing here.

Don’t come in the springtime
Its violent and bold
don’t come for the winters
you’ve never felt such cold
don’t come in the summer
Its scorching and bare
don’t come to Kansas
There aint nothing here.

Well a friend of mine
Thought he would try
To last through the fall
That prairie wind, it picked him up
And carried him off
Theres so many places better than here
don’t come to Kansas
There aint nothing here.

Dont come to Kansas
there aint nothing here

The Ballad of Red Wickham
Down at the lake of the Ozarks
Since the time I was very small
We'd wind down a devil's backbone
to go visit my grandma & pa.
Before we'd get to the farmhouse
we'd cross an old bridge past the dam
where underneath it was rumored
lived a violent and evil man.

It was said he stood over seven feet tall
with shoulders as broad as a bed
his cold grey eyes looked more dead than alive
but at night they appeared coal red.
he hated small animals and children
except when it was time for a meal
and what he couldnt find under the bridge
he'd break into a house and steal.

(chorus)
please dont come after me Red Wickam
I'd pray in dear Jesus' name
some will say pray protection frm Satan
but to me they are one and the same.

He's only friend was young Billy Capps
a ruthless and mean little punk
his days he spent harassing young women in town
and his nights cosistantly drunk.
He'd torture and poison your pets just for fun
and leave them for you to find
You can imagine the terror at so young and age
I could conjure at night in my mind.

I was sure they would break into my room
and take me from all that i knew
lock me in a dank dungeon
or cut me up to eat in a stew.
my cousin swore it had happened before
a kid ran away from home
and the only thing they found left of him
was a pile of gristle and bone.

(chorus)

For ten long years i'd been gripped by fear
everytime we'd visit our folk,
til it occurred to me i was too old to believe
in such an immature joke.
sure, i'd tell the youngsters these stories
about the sinister man
when cousin Darryl would fearfully stutter his name
i'd laugh crossing the bridge past the dam.

Then bam bam bam an alarming sound awoke me from my dream
and a beast bellowed out under moonlight
"I know that you've taken from me!"
My dad, my uncles and grandpa
ran to and then braced the door
and the women held all the children down
as we cowered onto the floor.

(chorus)

He said "come on out here you cowards,
someone has stolen my deer
I shot at it early this evening
and the blood trail has brought me here."
My grandpa shouted back at him
"Red Wickham, you've gone quite queer
we've got better to do than to mess with you,
now go on and get out of here!"

"you'll be sorry old man that you've done this
I've got with me young Billy Capps.
Theres no escaping this fix youre in
he's waiting for you in the back.
Don't bother trying to call the cops,
I've gone and cut the lines
Now someone had better face me,
I'll not ask one more time.

The men were discussing what to do
when my grandma walked toward the door
and before we knew what she was up to
she pulled out her 44.
She fired a shot from inside the house
and hit Red square in the knee
she opened the door and standing over him said
"the devil himself dont scare me."

I've raised 4 boys and 3 daughters
My first husband died in the war
I've plowed fields in drought
have gone with and without
for longer than I care for.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
and fine and well that may be
you can scorn this old lady but God help the man
who threatens her family."

Red tried to get up and grabbed for the gun
but his efforts were only in vain,
before he knew what hit him
a bullet was lodged in his brain.
Young Billy Capps when he saw what was done
he tore on down the lane.
and none from the Lake of the Ozarks were sad
that neither were heard from again.

Please dont come after me Red Wickham
I'd pray in dear Jesus' name
But now I thank God for my Granny
to me they are one and the same.

If I lived in Fulton

Up late last nite playing my heart out
at a pub called Paddy Malone's
When in walked the man I shared
much of my life with
then I noticed he wasnt alone

When he looked at me it was hard to believe
any time had passed at all
I just wanted so badly to get up and leave
but instead I just played my next song

and if I lived in Fulton
I'd be home right now
maybe tending a garden
from the seeds of our love
if either of us had known how

I played my last set
remembered to forget
theres not been anothe… Continue

Not too much oil, kiddo. the best way to take care of a drum is just to play it a lot. Can't wait to see it. Where do you want to meet on Saturday? The pub's open at 3. See ya

It's not for sale. It's just what was coming off the microphones. A lady in the other band that played with us plugged her digital recorder into the mixing board and made copies for us. I'll burn you a copy if you like.

Thanks for the comment about my art. It's winter now, that's when I paint the most when it's cold outside.
