The Grand Canal waterway was built in 1779 to ferry guinness, coal and other goods between Dublin and the River Shannon in the west to service Limerick and other cities.

Ireland has been enduring sub zero temperatures for much of December and January due to an Arctic air expansion coming down from Scandinavia and northern Europe. The last major disruptions of this scale where 1982, 1963 and 1947. Baltinglass in Co Wicklow reported a temperature of -14C last night, (Jan 8th) unprecedented for Ireland which relies on a steady mild airflow from the Atlantic to keep its winters mild.

Forecasters are predicting more heavy snow and sub zero temperatures for the next 10 days with no end in sight for the foreseeable future.

Comment by Patricia Amber on January 14, 2010 at 18:02: wow.... it is seemingly cold everywhere. I am in Oklahoma and we had 14 inches of snow on Christmas eve with temperatures getting as low as 4 degrees F on the night of the 8th of January.
I have a beautiful wood stove that keeps me warm. very grateful.

The world climate really is doing some odd things - here in Australia we are having the hottest summer on record, with fires and scorching temperatures... could do with some of your snow at the moment :-) Anyway, lovely pic (and it brings back memories of March '09 when I was last in Dublin).
