First time The Grand Canal in Dublin has frozen since 1982.
The Grand Canal waterway was built in 1779 to ferry guinness, coal and other goods between Dublin and the River Shannon in the west to service Limerick and other cities.
Ireland has been enduring sub zero temperatures for much of December and January due to an Arctic air expansion coming down from Scandinavia and northern Europe. The last major disruptions of this scale where 1982, 1963 and 1947. Baltinglass in Co Wicklow reported a temperature of -14C last night, (Jan 8th) unprecedented for Ireland which relies on a steady mild airflow from the Atlantic to keep its winters mild.
Forecasters are predicting more heavy snow and sub zero temperatures for the next 10 days with no end in sight for the foreseeable future.
