My mother was from Belfast... and you couldn't open an umbrella in the house, or put new shoes on a table in our house.... both actions brought bad luck. To break the spell of the sidhe, you turn your shirt inside out and put it on, and if you drop silverware at the table then it means someone is coming to visit... depending on what item is dropped, it could be a man, or woman.

Oh another one :

Do not ever open your umbrella in the house...you will wake the dead.

My Irish Grandmother said, "If you put your shirt on inside out (accidentally), it meant you were going to have company." I have no idea how this came to be but it is a nice way of starting your day.
