I have recently discovered the young group, Dervish from Sligo. This was quite accidental since I only downloaded "At the end of the day" as I was trying to find a recording of one of my favourite songs "Eilleen McMahon". The version on this album is not a good recording but I have been taken by almost everything else.

I hate to sound like a geriatric purist but the overwhelming criticism of the performance of the music is the almost ridiculous speed at which it is played.

When I was being taught to play the Uilleann Pipes, my teacher simply would not tolerate playing the music at inappropriate speed. He would simply state "this is the Dance Music of Ireland, and you cannot dance it properly at that speed".

I should add that he was an All-Irish Champion on the pipes! He insisted that playing too fast killed the natural lilt in the music. To me it has the unhealthy effect of making many of our traditional groups sound so alike, which is so sad.

Hi Deragon,
Ive been playing fiddle for around 14 months now. I guess my goal right now is becoming good enough to participate in sessions. Ive played guitar around 35 years . I'm also considering buying a Bodhran and learning it. with guitar,fiddle, bodhran and my recording equipment I may try a solo CD someday, but thats some time away.

Long story short, I am not really ever able to get on. However, because of business, I check my myspace (http://www.myspace.com/shawnmccoymain) almost daily. Seeing as my... no, OUR group has become the group with the fourth highest member count out of about 50 other groups, it would really be a heartbreak to have it all just crumble due to inactivity.

I am a composer and arranger from Grove City, Ohio, USA. I'm glad I found this group.

Here's a topic that's bound to open up some conversation. If you could choose one song (if you compose) or one music recording of you (if you play) that you feel defines you as an artist, what would it be? If it is on the Internet, please include a URL where it can be found and listened to.

As for me. I think the song (of mine) that I would use to represent me would be the 11th movement of my music piece called "Waiting for the Rain". The 11th movement itself is called "Healing Rain". I choose this work because it get a bit dynamic, emotional and over-the-top... and that is so true about me.
