I'm learning by watching Daniel, listening to lots of Altan and on a half full (has to be half full) Mountain Dew Bottle. It'll work until I can get a real bodhran. Or at least another type of framed skin drum.

Or you can use a CD case, book or piece of cardboard. the action is all in a nice loose wrist.

Heather Lewin-Tiarks just found a really good website for teaching Bodhran and it really help me...
Im planning to check this site often to know how to play .... She email the website but im gonna put it here for everybody to know :)

really nice site... and the best of all they even tell us how to play Bodhran without a Bodhran... that help me because i did not have a proper Tipper sounbd like I can pratice with the one i have... i just have to pratice that wrist technique :)
