How is St Patrick's Day celebrated around the world?
I would be interested in finding out where and how St Patrick's Day is celebrated around the world. Others on Live Ireland might like to share details of events they will be attending or involved in. Perhaps after the event people could post images or videos. I will be attending the Westbury St Patrick's Festival in Tasmania.
St Patrick's Day and Festival in Tasmania
Westbury in the North of Tasmania is the site of Tasmania's largest celebration of St Patrick's Day and also has a weekend festival on the weekend that falls nearest to the day itself. The website has details of the events held http://www.wspf.info/index.html and also details the towns many connections to Irish history http://www.wspf.info/gpage2.html The most important connection is that the Irish community of Westbury harboured and aided the escape from Tasmania of Young Irelanders, John Mitchell and Thomas Francis Meagher.

Gina, Sounds like a great place to be on St Patrick's Day/Week. I look forward to hearing and seeing more from you after this year's celebrations. I will be going to the Westbury celebrations the weekend before and will spend some part of the day in Hobart pubs listening to great Irish music.

IN Montreal, Qc, We have one of the biggest St-Patrick Parade and several bar and club celebrate the St-Patrick day at night.

Alexandre, Sounds great. Unfortunately there is no parade in Hobart but the day is starting to grow in importance again as people reconnect to their roots. Look forward to seeing and hearing more.

Henderson Street, Coatbridge. 7.30pm.The Praxis Theatre Lab from London perform this years play, "Red Countess Green Crow" by Sam Dowling. The play takes a close look at Ireland's literary and political resurgence in the first quarter of the 20th century. Set amidst events such as the demise of The Parliamentary Party and the growth of Sinn Fein, The Dublin Lock out of 1913, The Great War of 1914-18, The Easter Rising of 1916 and the birth of the 26 county Irish Free State, the play examines the relationship between playwright Sean O'Casey, who clawed his way out of poverty in Dublin and Countess Markiewicz who turned her back on wealth to embrace Dublin's poor. Hi
In France, for most of people, St Patrick's day is sort of fashionable, just as is Halloween. There's no real interest in what it really means, in the cultural roots those events grew from: it's only another opportunity to live it up and drink. 30 years ago, Reggae was THE music everybody was running for and everybody was a Rasta..
But as far as people are enjoying... What does it matter? :-)
For a little less people, it's the opportunity to go and hear some Irish music played where it's not usualy played. It's not that often and... it's a blessing. ;-)

Like France we have those who just use it as a reason to party but many are now interested in their heritage; particularly those who had ancestors sent out as convicts from Ireland. For previous generations convict heritage was seen as something to forget but in the last few decades people are wanting to know about these people and their culture. We also have many more recent Irish immigrants. Whether it is Christmas, Easter or St Patrick's Day it seems that there will always be those who celebrate with no understanding of why. As a parent I am keen for my children to know of their cultural heritage.

The Westbury celebrations began today and what a magnificent day it was. A large crowd enjoyed the performances on the main stage and will be back for more this evening. On a personal note, Daideo and the Blue Mosquitoes received a great response and it was quite emotional when they played original songs about Thomas Francis Meagher called 'The Irish Pier' and 'Meagher's Escape' in the town which hid Meagher and ensured his successful escape to America. The Mosquitoes are playing again tonight.
