Profile Information

Riessen, the Netherlands
About Me:
I'm a proud Saxon from the beautiful region of Tweante in the Netherlands. I study English Language & Culture, which however drove me to promoting my own language more and more, the beautiful language called Tweants. I do however know that language learning isn't a big part of national curricula elsewhere, so you may address me in Dutch, German, English, Tweants (please :)) or Norse, and I'll be perfectly willing and happy to retort in one of them.

I play snare drum in the local marching band and two local Oompa bands (you might check some of my vids to see what they are). I taught myself to play guitar, though I don't consider myself a master at it.
Website (If any):
Favorite Music:
Reggae-Ska-Jazz-Celtic-Blues-Salsa-Classical-Austrian/Slovenian Folk-Rock (all types)-Electronical music
Welcome to my page.

This is the flag of my region (Twente, the Netherlands), which has the Saxon Steed on it. This is the symbol for Saxon heritage, much like the Uilleann harp is a symbol of Ireland.

This is the crest of my hometown, Riessen. It shows a twig, the "Riessentak" from which my hometown got its name. Riessen received city rights in 1243. So it has existed well before that. We do not even know why our town is named Riessen. An interesting story though is that in the early middle ages there were two settlements approximately at the same sites our town and a neighbouring village are nowadays. They were separated by a forest. Once, a storm raged, and ravaged the forest completely. All trees had fallen in one direction, and pointed their branches and twigs (the Riessen) to the east, and the trunks (the Hoolten) to the west.

Invading London

Posted on February 16, 2009 at 11:41 0 Comments

Last Christmas Eve, in my hometown, a number of choirs teamed up to sing together. A couple of musicians from the Music Union I'm also with, supported them. Amongst the listeners were a number of Assyrians (The are several Assyrian communities in the Netherlands). They happened to be members of an Assyrian choir, and liked what they heard. After the "concert", an Assyrian delegation asked the musicians if they were willing to support their choir on a very special occasion. They had been… Continue

Dutch Culture 3: Santa Claus?

Posted on November 11, 2008 at 23:30 2 Comments

First of all I would like to apologise if the large pictures cause you any trouble in reading my blog. I do not know how to compress them.

In the English-speaking world, christmas is the most important feast towards the end of the year. People exchange gifts, undertake all kinds of christmas activities and children believe heartily in the existence of Santa Claus...

In the Netherlands, christmas is celebrated too, but the focus is not so much on the exchange of gifts… Continue

Dutch Culture 2: The Orange Feeling

The reason for this blog is the European Soccer (football) Championships, which is the current big sports event that nearly every dutchman has his mind set on, this year hosted by Austria and Switzerland.

The Dutch team:

Whenever large groups of Dutch (go abroad to) suppport a national sports team (really, any sport), they dress up in all kinds of various ridiculous costumes that vary each year, although some remain popular… Continue

Dutch Culture 1: Driving in NL

Posted on May 26, 2008 at 10:47 6 Comments

Right so, I haven't uploaded a blog before, so I hereby got blog-deflowered or (b)logged, so to say :)

I decided to use this (irregular or infrequent) blog to explain some features of Dutch culture to the world.

I just received a text message from my girl friend that she's finally passed the driving exams, and so she can go pick up her license and drive out and about the country. I can almost hear the people on LI who know me thinking: But isn't he about 22 years old, so his… Continue

Hey, beast of NL..!!! Howdy..?

I just missed you by few minutes (or were there hours?) in the chatroom...

So I thought I'd directly ask you :

How are you?

Still alive, and well... and musician..?  I really hope so..!

Up here, things are a little bit tougher... but hey... I try to reach the fiddle and get it out of the case (as well as the bow.!) as often as I can..!

Anyhow, hope you're still enjoy yourself... Take care!

Martin! Wow, it's been awhile. For some reason you have not been receiving a few of my messages way back...I guess it was a fluke in the workings of cyberspace. Anyway, I hope you get this one. I so appreciate your keeping up with me. It's really slow going on here. Do you have a Facebook page? I love Facebook so much...I have friends all over the world now. Let me know if you do have a page and we'll connect there, too. I highly recommend it if you haven't. Love the format! You can share videos, photos, thoughts...anything of interest instantly with all of your FB friends. However, I am not leaving LIveIreland because I love my friends here, too. : )))

Summer weather has arrived here, but still not too bad. Windows are open, birds are singing and the night skies are beautiful. Slept out under the stars and the Moon the other and the three cats...what a treat!

Hope everything's going well with your 'girl'...was happy to hear about it. You are at the age where the girls continue to 'come out of the woodwork'......remember to always appreciate that, because later on............ ; )

Went through all things in my photography journal on our Ireland trip all the way back in 2005....ready to go again. Those memories are as fresh today as they were then...amazing how those kinds of journeys remain fresh in one's mind. Perhaps one day.....I'm wanting to travel to Italy to visit some new FB friends and just to experience the country....fascinating land and people.

Take care of yourself, Martin, and continue to stay in touch.

Yep. I noted that we share some passions as well as views on how to behave in chat rooms and forums. As for the latter, I have been a moderator and admin for a large forum concerning my profession for about a decade, so I have seen all sorts, and find your outlook commendable..

My visits here will probably be a bit irregular too, but I will be here once in a while.

Vriendelijke grouten, Claes
